If you build it, they will stay: Ending Ottawa’s biotech brain drain
Ottawa has earned a global reputation as a vibrant city for medical research and innovation. But if it wants to keep its intellectual capital in the nation’s capital, more lab space and private investment will be needed.
In an interview from the series “Better healthcare starts here”, Virica CEO Jean-Simon Diallo and NeuroBot CEO Dane Bedward emphasize the importance of bridging the gap between discovery and market.
They believe uOttawa’s new Advanced Medical Research Centre (AMRC) will serve as this much-needed bridge by incubating next-generation health technologies and treatments. Scheduled to open in 2026, the AMRC will welcome hundreds of researchers and employees from the Faculty of Medicine, along with accelerator and incubator companies and regional partners.

uOttawa Kanata North campus and co-op: Bridging academia and business
The University of Ottawa’s co-op program bridges the academic and professional worlds, providing students with real-world work experience. Students in select disciplines have access to four-month work terms, allowing them to earn salaries, while gaining practical skills and industry connections.
The University is uniquely positioned in close proximity to Canada’s largest tech park, home to over 550 companies and 33,000 skilled workers. In 2019, recognizing the opportunities for mutually beneficial collaborations with this local tech community, uOttawa became the first postsecondary institution to establish a satellite campus in the tech park.
